USA trip: The Pacific North West

Over the coming weeks I’m going to blog the highlights of my 2013 USA trip. I attended the ACFW Conference in Indianapolis and took a scenic route from Australia to Indy. I hope you enjoy my travel adventures.

After a long layover in Hawaii, I arrived in Bellingham, WA on a drizzly Saturday morning. My dear friend and writing critique partner Suzie Johnson met me at the airport and we drove the short distance to the Canadian border. I’d managed to sleep on the flight, largely due to acquiring a last minute upgrade to first class with Alaskan Airlines. I was awake and getting used to travelling on the wrong side of the road. Our cars are right hand drive in Australia.

Our first stop was the Peace Arch at the border of Washington State and British Columbia. The Peace Arch Park is international territory and shared by the USA and Canada.

The Peace Arch Monument, dedicated in 1921, is in the middle of the park. It commemorates the 1814 signing of the Treaty of Ghent.

This is the view of Washington from the Canadian side of the arch.

This photo was taken under the Peace Arch. The Canadian flag flower garden can be seen in the distance. We watched a couple of cute American and Canadian squirrels playing together in the park. You can stand in the park and see residential houses in Surrey, British Columbia, across the road. If you cross the road into Canada, you need to meet the Canadian visa requirements and re-enter the USA via customs. The busy highway in the photo below is full of cars waiting to cross the border into Washington.

Stop by next Friday and I’ll share my highlights from the beautiful city of Seattle.

About the Book

Be taken on a tour of the Majesty of Marriage through 31 days of ‘From Eden with Love.’

Discover the Heavenly mystery underpinning the meaning of the Christian Marriage.

About the Author

Ray Hawkins, retired after over 40 years as a Churches of Christ minister, enjoys sharing themes from the Scriptures through Devotional writing. Married to Mary, multi-published inspirational romance author, they have three children and five grandchildren. Ray shares his insights in his first two books on Marriage and Children with more ideas to come about ministry and much more. Living in Beauty Point Tasmania Ray heads up a new Christian Fellowship as well as doing relief preaching, community work and writing.

Narelle: From Eden With Love is another excellent devotion book by Ray Hawkins in his 31 Biblical Devotions series. This book explores the meaning of love and marriage from a Biblical perspective. Each devotion starts with a key verse, which is discussed with references to other Biblical passages and verses, and has a reflection section at the end.

The first devotion starts in Genesis, with Adam and Eve and the Biblical symbolism of marriage. Devotion topics include The Noble Woman (Proverbs 31), The Noble Man (1 Timothy 3) and practical examples from the Bible. The devotions define and explain why God is at the heart of Christian romance and marriage. I highly recommend this devotion book to those looking to learn more about what the Bible says about love and marriage, and gain practical tips for their own marraige and relationship with God.

ACRBA Tour Shadowed in Silk by Christine Lindsay

3 – 7 February 2014

Australian Christian Readers Blog Alliance

is introducing

Shadowed in Silk

WhiteFire Publishing Sept 2011

by

Christine Lindsay

About the Book

She was invisible to those who should have loved her.

After the Great War, Abby Fraser returns to India with her small son, where her husband is stationed with the British army. She has longed to go home to the land of glittering palaces and veiled women . . . but Nick has become a cruel stranger. It will take more than her American pluck to survive.

Major Geoff Richards, broken over the loss of so many of his men in the trenches of France, returns to his cavalry post in Amritsar. But his faith does little to help him understand the ruthlessness of his British peers toward the Indian people he loves. Nor does it explain how he is to protect Abby Fraser and her child from the husband who mistreats them.

Amid political unrest, inhospitable deserts, and Russian spies, tensions rise in India as the people cry for the freedom espoused by Gandhi. Caught between their own ideals and duty, Geoff and Abby stumble into sinister secrets . . . secrets that will thrust them out of the shadows and straight into the fire of revolution.

About the Author

Christine Lindsay writes historical inspirational novels with strong love stories, and she takes pride in her Irish roots. Her great grandfather and grandfather worked as riveters in the Belfast shipyard, one of those ships her ancestors helped build was the Titanic. On her mother’s side it was stories of ancestors who served in the British Cavalry in India that seeded Christine’s long-time fascination with the British Raj and became the stimulus for her Twilight of the British Raj series.

The Pacific coast of Canada, about 200 miles north of Seattle, is Christine’s home where she lives with her husband, David, and they enjoy the visits from their adult children and grandchildren. Like a lot of authors, Christine’s chief editor is her cat.

Narelle: Shadowed in Silk is different to the typical historical romance and I really enjoyed reading a book set in India. The setting is exotic and the story is beautifully written.

Abby is a woman who suffered many hardships yet is resilient in her devotion to her wayward husband and beloved son. I was drawn into the story and loved watching Abby’s spiritual journey evolve. Geoff is a widower who has lost so much in The Great War and struggles in his desire to help Abby and her son.

The intrigue and suspense in the story against the backdrop of the native Indian people seeking independence from Britain captured my interest until the very end. I highly recommend this story to those looking for a fascinating, fast paced and unique historical romance set in India during the rule of the British Raj.
